A lighter bag is easier on you and on every vehicle that carries it. It also makes trains, buses and walking from the station realistic, which opens up all the other lower-impact choices on this site.
The One-Bag Approach
- Pack for one week, even on longer trips, and plan to do laundry.
- Choose a color palette so every top goes with every bottom.
- Bring quick-drying fabrics you can wash in a sink.
- Wear your bulkiest shoes and jacket on travel days.
- Use packing cubes to keep things organized and compressed.
- Lay everything out, then put a third of it back.
Reusables Worth Their Space
Water bottle
A refillable bottle, or one with a filter where tap water is not drinkable, cuts down on plastic bottles.
Shopping bag
A light fold-up bag for markets and groceries.
Cutlery and cup
Handy for picnics, trains and street food.
Solid toiletries
Bar shampoo, soap and solid sunscreen avoid liquid limits and leaks.
For U.S. flights, carry-on liquids must be in containers of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less; see the TSA liquids rule for the details. Solid toiletries sidestep the issue entirely.

Gear You Can Skip
Most travelers come home with clothes they never wore. Leave behind the “just in case” outfits, full-size toiletries, and anything you could buy cheaply at your destination if you really need it. Buying a sweater or a sun hat locally is also a small way to support local shops.
Think twice about single-use travel products: disposable rain ponchos, travel-size everything, plastic-wrapped snack packs. A little planning replaces most of them with something you already own.
A Sample One-Bag List for a Week
| Category | What to pack |
|---|---|
| Clothing | Three or four tops, two bottoms, one warm layer, a light rain jacket, underwear and socks for four or five days, sleepwear. |
| Shoes | One comfortable walking pair worn on travel days, plus sandals or light shoes. |
| Toiletries | Solid shampoo and soap, toothbrush, small sunscreen, any medicines in their original containers. |
| Reusables | Water bottle, fold-up shopping bag, cutlery set, small cloth or towel. |
| Documents and tech | Passport or ID, cards, phone, one charger and a universal plug adapter. |
Adjust for the climate, but resist the urge to add a second of everything. Laundry facilities, or a sink and a bar of soap, are almost always close at hand.
Why Light Bags Help the Places You Visit
Lighter luggage makes it realistic to arrive by train and walk or take a local bus to your lodging, instead of needing a taxi or transfer for every move. It makes smaller, family-run guesthouses on upper floors or narrow lanes an easy choice. And it means less wear on cobbled streets and stairways that were never designed for a parade of large rolling suitcases.
